Nigeria’s Top 10 Male Boxers Dominating the Global Ring
Nigerian fighters have become dominant forces in international boxing, rising through the ranks with power, skill, and grit. According to BoxRec, here are the top 10 active Nigerian male boxers making waves in the squared circle.
Peter Akinbo reports.

1. Anthony Joshua (28-5-0, 25 KOs)
Anthony Joshua stands as Nigeria’s most decorated boxer. The two-time unified heavyweight world champion has consistently delivered on the global stage with his knockout power — most notably his crushing second-round KO of Francis Ngannou in March 2024, which earned Knockout of the Year by CBS Sports.
Despite a setback in September 2024 with a fifth-round TKO loss to Daniel Dubois at Wembley, Joshua remains No. 4 in BoxRec’s heavyweight rankings, behind Oleksandr Usyk, Dubois, and Agit Kabayel.

2. Efe Ajagba (20-1-0, 14 KOs)
Heavyweight contender Efe Ajagba has rebounded strongly since his lone defeat to Frank Sánchez in 2021, winning five straight. With his fearsome right hand and granite chin, the 30-year-old Nigerian is set to face Martin Bakole on May 3, 2025, in Saudi Arabia. His latest victory came against Guido Vianello, whom he dominated last April.

3. Taiwo ‘Esepor’ Agbaje (17-0-0, 12 KOs)
Featherweight star Taiwo Agbaje, known as “Esepor” (Yoruba for “plenty punches”), remains unbeaten and exciting. The 27-year-old Lagos native has already secured the WBF Intercontinental and West African titles and is viewed as one of Nigeria’s most promising talents.

4. Efe Apochi (13-3-0, 13 KOs)
Cruiserweight powerhouse Efe Apochi returned to action in February 2025 with a ninth-round TKO over Dionardo Minor, making him the first to stop the American. Now signed to Christy Martin Promotions, the 37-year-old maintains a 100% knockout rate in his wins, underlining his raw power.

5. Samuel Nmomah (21-0-0, 5 KOs)
Middleweight technician Samuel Nmomah continues his unbeaten streak, recently clinching the WBA Mediterranean title with a points win over Abdul Khattab in Italy. With 5 knockouts in 21 wins, the 28-year-old is one of Nigeria’s most technically refined boxers.

6. Tope Tajudeen (18-1-0, 16 KOs)
Featherweight puncher Tope Tajudeen is building a fearsome reputation with his 89% knockout rate. At 27, he’s already considered one of Africa’s most dangerous featherweights, combining raw power with relentless pressure.

7. Yusuf Adisa (15-0-0, 10 KOs)
Featherweight Yusuf Adisa has kept a perfect record while steadily climbing the ranks. The 25-year-old recently advanced to the WBC Grand Prix round of 16 after defeating Carlos Arteaga Orona under the WBC’s new scoring system in Riyadh.

8. Olanrewaju Durodola (50-10-0, 44 KOs)
Veteran cruiserweight Olanrewaju Durodola has fought some of the sport’s best, racking up 50 wins with an astonishing 44 by knockout. At 44 years old, his experience and heavy hands continue to make him a respected figure in Nigerian boxing history.

9. Joshua Wahab (24-2-0, 17 KOs)
Super-featherweight Joshua Wahab has notched 24 wins and 17 knockouts. Though he suffered a tough KO loss to Mark Chamberlain in May 2024, Wahab remains one of Africa’s leading fighters in his division and has vowed a strong comeback.

10. Afolabi Shittu (16-1-0, 16 KOs)
At just 21 years old, super-flyweight Afolabi Shittu boasts a stunning 100% knockout rate in his 16 wins. His explosive power and early success have marked him as one of the most thrilling prospects to watch in Nigerian boxing.
