Banky W has revealed that Wizkid began his career as a “studio rat,” reflecting on the artist’s early struggles before fame.
In a video circulating on social media, Banky W, who played a significant role in launching Wizkid’s career through his label, Empire Mates Entertainment (EME), shared how Wizkid would spend hours at various studios, unable to afford studio time.
Banky W described Wizkid as committed and talented, saying, “For a long time, Wizkid couldn’t afford his own studio sessions. He would go from studio to studio, waiting all day, hoping an engineer or producer would let him record for just a few minutes.”
He added, “Wizkid spent hours working on hooks and melodies, always prepared in case he got a chance to jump on the mic for a few minutes. Over time, that became his process.”
Today, Banky W noted, Wizkid is one of the fastest songwriters he’s ever encountered, able to freestyle melodies that turn into hits. “That’s where the name ‘Wiz’ came from,” he explained.
