Nigerian afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, recounted his first meeting with Jamaican reggae star, Damian Marley.
He disclosed that their initial encounter occurred at a festival in France years ago, where the reggae artist “stole” his weed.
Speaking in a recent interview with Naija FM, Lagos, Kuti explained that he gave Marley the weed to smoke and pass back, but Marley “chanced” him after lighting it.
“Damian Marley and I first met at a festival in South France. It was at the beginning of my career. He had just released his sophomore breakthrough album, ‘Welcome To Jamrock’.
“We played the show together. He stole my weed. He scammed me. He said we should share it. After rolling it, I gave it to him because he insisted he would light it, but after lighting it, he chanced me. I asked him to pass it back, but he said he didn’t want to share anymore,” Kuti said.
Kuti also spoke about his recent collaboration with Damian Marley on the song ‘Dey.’
He mentioned that aside from their friendship, their managers have close relationships.
He explained that he sent Marley all the songs from his upcoming album, and Marley chose to jump on ‘Dey,’ which eventually became the lead single.
The afrobeat crooner said his upcoming album would feature many musical heavyweights.
