EPL admits 13 VAR errors, pushes for offside technology introduction.

by Admin

The Premier League is actively tackling the challenges posed by VAR errors, with 13 mistakes recorded in the first 23 rounds of the current season—an improvement from 20 errors at the same point last year.

These errors include four incorrect VAR interventions and nine missed interventions, as identified by the Key Match Incidents panel, according to BBC reports on Tuesday.

In response, the league has introduced a six-point plan to enhance the accuracy, speed, and transparency of VAR decisions.

A key part of this initiative is the potential introduction of semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) before the season ends.

Tony Scholes, the Chief Football Officer, expressed optimism, telling SkySports News, “The progress made over the last four to six weeks has been significant. We believe we’re going to adopt the best system and the most accurate system.”

The proposed SAOT system aims to speed up offside decisions without sacrificing accuracy, helping to reduce delays during matches.

Furthermore, the Premier League plans to improve fan engagement by having referees announce VAR decisions within stadiums, with the hope of rolling this out by next season. Scholes highlighted the importance of this, noting, “It’s not good enough [VAR communication with fans in stadiums]. We have a long way to go to improve it.”

Despite these advancements, the league is proceeding cautiously. The introduction of semi-automated offside technology had been hoped for during the October or November international windows but is now targeted for later in the season. If confidence in the technology isn’t reached by the final match rounds, it may be delayed until the next season.

Scholes acknowledged that VAR intervention times have decreased this season. The average check now takes 40 seconds, compared to 66 seconds last season.

Scholes, though cautious, emphasized the significant progress made in recent weeks and reaffirmed the league’s intention to introduce SAOT this season. “This technology doesn’t improve the accuracy, it makes the process more efficient,” he said.

The Premier League also declined to reveal the nine missed interventions but outlined four key VAR errors:

  1. Outtara ‘handball’ – Bournemouth 1-1 Newcastle (25 August)
    • The goal initially stood, but VAR overturned it for a handball. Howard Webb later stated the VAR intervention was incorrect.
  2. De Ligt foul on Ings – West Ham 2-1 Man Utd (27 October)
    • Referee David Coote awarded a penalty after reviewing the foul on Danny Ings. Webb later stated that the penalty shouldn’t have been awarded.
  3. Noorgard red card – Brentford 0-0 Everton (23 November)
    • VAR advised the referee to issue a red card to Christian Noorgard for a challenge on Jordan Pickford. The red card was later overturned on appeal.
  4. Milenkovic goal disallowed – Nottingham Forest 3-2 Southampton (19 January)
    • A goal by Nikola Milenkovic was ruled out after VAR indicated offside interference by Chris Wood, despite Wood not touching the ball. An independent panel later ruled the goal should have been given.

The Premier League’s new goals for improving VAR include:

  • Improving the clarity around the high threshold for VAR intervention and making ‘referee’s call’ part of regular football terminology.
  • Reducing delays with the introduction of SAOT as soon as possible.
  • Enhancing the fan experience with clear referee announcements and replays on stadium big screens.
  • Improving VAR training to enhance decision-making.
  • Increasing transparency with more regular messaging for broadcasters and fans.
  • Developing better education and communication around VAR for fans and all involved.

The Premier League remains committed to refining VAR protocols to maintain the integrity of the game while improving the experience for players, officials, and fans.
