France’s former world number four, Caroline Garcia, announced on Friday that she will retire from tennis, with this year’s French Open marking her final appearance at Roland Garros.
The 31-year-old, an 11-time WTA title winner and two-time French Open women’s doubles champion, shared the news on social media, revealing she has “a few tournaments left” before stepping away from the sport.
“Dear tennis, it’s time to say goodbye,” Garcia wrote. “After 15 years competing at the highest level, and more than 25 years dedicating nearly every second of my life to it, I feel ready to start a new chapter.”
Garcia, who has earned nearly \$19 million in prize money, captured the 2022 WTA Finals title and reached her career-best singles result at a major the same year — the US Open semi-finals. She also claimed her second French Open doubles title in 2022 alongside compatriot Kristina Mladenovic.
Though once ranked world No. 4, Garcia has since dropped to 145th.
“My tennis journey hasn’t always been easy. It’s been more than just wins and losses — it’s been love or hate, happiness or frustration,” she reflected. “But now, it’s time for something else. My body and personal goals are calling.”
Garcia will begin her farewell run when the French Open starts on Sunday.
