Manchester United have confirmed plans to activate a one-year extension on Harry Maguire’s contract.
The 31-year-old defender, who has faced challenges in recent seasons, has made seven appearances under current manager Ruben Amorim. Notably, Maguire wore the captain’s armband during the match against Newcastle, his first time since 2023.
Ahead of United’s clash against Liverpool at Anfield, Amorim announced the decision to extend Maguire’s deal. “We are going to trigger our option for Harry Maguire,” Amorim stated. “I spoke with him this morning and told him he needs to improve on the pitch. We need him a lot.”
morim also highlighted the importance of leadership within the squad, stressing that while Maguire has leadership qualities, he must further develop both his game and his influence on the pitch.
“We’re lacking leaders on the field, and Harry has that potential,” Amorim added. “He knows the challenges he’s faced here, but we’re happy to move forward and activate the extension.”
