The first Somali-born member of the Norwegian parliament is Marian Hussein. This is a great history, a great achievement for an immigrant and hijabi Muslim woman, her unprecedented victory will inspire millions of immigrants, most especially those from the African continent.
The results showed that 11 of the 169 newly elected parliamentary representatives are of immigrant origin. Marian Hussein is one of eleven of immigrant background who has now been elected to the Parliament and will also be the first woman to wear the hijab
Marian, a 35-year old Socialist Left Party member joins the growing list of Somalis who have risen into national politics in foreign countries. Prior to her political career, Marian was the chairperson of the Somali Student Foreign Society (SSF), with one of the founding members including the former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Kheyre.
Marian in her victory speech said;
“The Norwegian people have spoken and it is clear that the people want change. I thank the voters for their trust”
