Afrobeats singer Spyro has opened up about the challenges of publicly proclaiming Jesus Christ in the Nigerian music industry.
In a recent interview with Echo Room, Spyro recounted a conversation he had with popular R&B artist-turned-pastor Banky W, who shared his own experiences. According to Spyro, Banky W revealed that his struggles in the music industry began after he openly declared his faith in Christ.
Spyro described how identifying as a “Jesus boy” has led to discrimination and lack of support within the industry.
He said, “My biggest challenge in the music industry right now is discrimination. I came out with the ‘Jesus boy’ brand, and I’ve received the biggest criticisms. If you want to be truthful to yourself, how many media moguls support or post me when I drop songs? Apart from the blogs I paid, how many post me? You see them posting other artists, even those not doing as well as I am.”
He continued, “The answer is simple: once you publicly declare Christ, you enter a war. It’s like the whole system is designed to pull you down. Banky W told me his struggles began in the industry the moment he proclaimed Christ. He told me to be sure I was ready for this. He said that when he was a ‘bad boy,’ everything was smooth, but the moment he chose to do things God’s way, the battles began.”
