Thomas Tuchel has urged England to “prove a point” in their upcoming World Cup qualifier against Serbia after a lacklustre 2-0 victory over Andorra at Villa Park.
England took the lead in the first half when Christian Garcia scored an own goal, before Declan Rice doubled the advantage with a header after the break. The result marked England’s fourth consecutive qualifying win, keeping them top of Group K, but their performance once again drew criticism for being flat and uninspired.
Despite boasting a talented squad, England struggled for creativity and sharpness in attack, raising further doubts about Tuchel’s ability to mould this generation into a title-winning team.
Looking ahead to Tuesday’s clash in Belgrade, Tuchel acknowledged the challenge Serbia presents:
“We will try to prove a point, to win and put out the next performance, and to be tough in the circumstances,” he said. “We expect a very emotional stadium and a physical opponent who plays direct. We have to adapt, make no excuses, and show we’re a strong group on the right track.”
Tuchel’s reign so far has been mixed, with unconvincing wins over Albania, Latvia, and Andorra, followed by a worrying friendly defeat to Senegal. With the World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada drawing closer, pressure is mounting on the German coach to establish a clearer identity and purpose for his side.
