UN Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned the deadly attacks that occurred over the weekend in Benue State, North Central Nigeria, where scores of civilians lost their lives.
Guterres called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.
According to reports, dozens were killed in their sleep and many displaced during the brutal assault on Yelewata village.
Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, stated: “We’re monitoring the situation. The Secretary-General condemns the killing of innocent civilians, including in Nigeria, and we hope that those responsible for this violence will be found and apprehended.”
President Bola Tinubu also denounced the continued violence in Benue, urging leaders and residents to embrace peace, love, and mutual understanding.
He is scheduled to visit the state on Wednesday as part of efforts to restore peace and tackle the ongoing crisis. During the visit, Tinubu is expected to meet with traditional rulers, political and religious figures, community leaders, and youth groups to find lasting solutions.
The president extended his condolences to the families of the victims and all those affected by the conflict.
