US on serious alert after North Korea claims it tested new command-and-control system in simulated nuclear counterstrike.

North Korea’s secretive state claimed to have conducted a test of a new nuclear weapons command-and-control system on Monday, April 22. The test involved the firing of projectiles carrying simulated nuclear warheads from multiple rocket launcher units, overseen by leader Kim Jong Un. This drill, simulating a nuclear counterattack, was directed in response to what North Korea described as “extremely provocative and aggressive” annual joint air force exercises conducted by the United States and South Korea.

While North Korea has tested both the rocket launcher system and a simulated nuclear counterstrike before, this exercise marked the first use of the “Haekbangashoe” – or nuclear trigger – command-and-control system, as reported by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). Military analysts noted the significance of this demonstration in terms of command and control, emphasizing the practicalities of transmitting orders from Kim Jong Un down to launch units.

Experts, however, find it challenging to assess the maturity of this command-and-control system. North Korea has been progressively advancing its weapons capabilities, aiming to miniaturize a warhead to fit on a long-range missile. While it is believed that North Korea has produced a small stockpile of nuclear warheads, questions remain about their capability to make them small and light enough for missile deployment.

Recent images released by North Korea depicted the launch of four rockets, reportedly hitting targets on an island 352 kilometers (218 miles) away. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the firing of multiple short-range missiles into waters off the peninsula’s east coast.

The Kim regime has been actively testing various weapons systems, including those with potential to threaten South Korea and the United States. In response, the US and South Korea have conducted their own military exercises, including the two-week Korea Flying Training 2024, featuring approximately 100 warplanes, including F-35 stealth fighters from both countries.

The KCNA report criticized these exercises, stating they have “incited extreme war fever” and cannot be labeled as defensive or deterrent in nature.
