Nigeria’s crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, has filed a N1.2 billion lawsuit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the National Assembly, alleging violations of his fundamental rights.
Bobrisky has been embroiled in controversy since activist VeryDarkMan shared an alleged audio recording in which Bobrisky reportedly claimed to have paid EFCC officials N15 million to drop money laundering charges. In the recording, he also allegedly mentioned that his “godfather” and Haliru Nababa, Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, facilitated his serving a six-month sentence in a private apartment rather than a prison.
Bobrisky denied the authenticity of the recording and threatened legal action against VeryDarkMan. Meanwhile, the House of Representatives Joint Committee on Financial Crimes and Reformatory Institutions initiated a probe into the bribery allegations, summoning Bobrisky, VeryDarkMan, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyode, and Nababa to appear before the committee.
On Instagram, Bobrisky shared a court document dated October 10, restraining EFCC and the National Assembly from harassing, detaining, or declaring him wanted. He stated that the EFCC’s actions were based on unverified claims from a hearsay WhatsApp recording, which led to social media ridicule, threats, and a breach of his privacy.
In the lawsuit, Bobrisky is demanding N200 million from the EFCC for psychotic trauma and N1 billion from the National Assembly for violating his right to a fair hearing. The suit also highlights damages caused by the alleged invasion of his privacy, mental distress, and reputational harm stemming from the unverified audio recording.
