Nigeria’s Chidimma Adetshina secured the first runner-up position at the 73rd Miss Universe competition held in Mexico.
The final moments of the event, which took place at Arena CDMX in Mexico City early Sunday morning, saw an intense showdown between Adetshina and Denmark’s Victoria Kjaer Theilvig, as both women were poised to claim the crown. The competition, hailed as one of the most exciting in recent years, showcased the talents, intelligence, and grace of women from across the globe.
The official Miss Universe Instagram page shared a post celebrating the top two contestants, stating: “The final two! Nigeria and Denmark, two incredible women, one unforgettable moment.”
Ultimately, Miss Denmark, Victoria Kjaer Theilvig, claimed the crown, succeeding Miss Universe 2023, Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua.
Adetshina’s impressive performance and elegance earned her widespread admiration from both the judges and the audience.
Earlier this year, Adetshina faced controversy when she withdrew from the Miss South Africa 2024 contest, where she had reached the final stage. The decision followed concerns raised by some South Africans regarding her nationality. Despite this, she continued to represent Taraba State, going on to win the Miss Universe Nigeria title.
Adetshina’s achievement adds to Nigeria’s proud history in international beauty pageants. In 2001, Nigeria’s Agbani Darego made history as the first Black African to win the Miss World title at just 18 years old. Her victory sparked a movement, with the name “Agbani” becoming synonymous with slender beauty in Nigeria, and inspiring countless women across the country.
As the first Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria to win Miss World, Agbani’s success marked a significant milestone for Nigeria and the entire African continent.
