Finland should also acknowledge Uyghur genocide – MP Suldaan Said Ahmed

by Admin

There have been protests in many countries against China’s inhumane treatment of the Uyghur people.  Several countries, including the US, Canada and the Netherlands, have accused China of committing genocide.  The countries have accused China of committing crimes against humanity and possibly genocide against the Uyghur population and other mostly-Muslim ethnic groups in the north-western region of Xinjiang.

It is alleged that more than one million Uyghurs are under detention against their will over the past few years in what China refers to as “re-education camps”, and sentenced hundreds of thousands to prison terms.

Evidences obtained clearly shows they are subjected to forced labour and their women being forcibly sterilised. Some former camp detainees have also alleged they were tortured and sexually abused.

BBC reported that the US is among several countries to have accused China of committing genocide in Xinjiang. The leading human rights groups Amnesty and Human Rights Watch have published reports accusing China of crimes against humanity.

It is good to note that there are about 12 million Uyghurs, mostly Muslim, living in Xinjiang, which is officially known as the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR).

The Uyghurs who have become endangered species in China speak their own language, which is similar to Turkish, and see themselves as culturally and ethnically close to Central Asian nations. They make up less than half of the Xinjiang population.

Today in Helsinki, there was a protest at the Finnish Parliament in solidarity with the minority Uyghur people against the genocide that China is perpetrating.

The Left Alliance latest MP, Suldaan Said Ahmed was invited to speak during the protest for human rights. He promised to do everything he could to support the Uyghurs when he resume his Parliamentary duty. “I think Finland hasn’t done enough for the Uyghurs”, he said. He assures the protesters that he would look into the possibility of starting a group in the Parliament for the Uyghurs. According to MP Ahmed, the Finnish state should also acknowledge Uyghur genocide.
