Nigerian musician Anthony Ebuka Victor, better known as Victony, has shared insights into his rap inspirations.
The music star, who began his career as a rapper before exploring other genres, cited his influences as global heavyweights like Kendrick Lamar, Drake, J. Cole, and Meek Mill, as well as Nigerian artists MI Abaga, Odumodublvck, and Shallipopi.
In a recent interview with Sway Universe, Victony remarked, “I started as a rapper and looked up to Kendrick Lamar early in my career because of his artistry. Kendrick isn’t just about his lyrics but also his visuals and presentation, which made me a strong fan.”
He also praised Drake for his versatility and pioneering role in blending Afrobeats with American hip-hop. “I was a fan of Drake before he jumped on the Afrobeats wave,” he said. “I also listened to J. Cole and Meek Mill.”
Victony highlighted MI Abaga’s impact on the Nigerian rap scene, noting, “MI Abaga inspired me by popularising rap in Nigeria and proving that success as a rapper is possible in the country. Now we have artists like Odumodublvck and Shallipopi, with Odumodublvck recently completing a US tour. Rap is growing in Nigeria, and I sometimes blend it with Afrobeats.”
He also expressed his desire to inspire other Nigerian youth, stating, “I’m doing this for Doyin. I’m doing this for the kids in Ojo. I hope they look at me and find inspiration.”
