Botswana Introduces Monthly Stipend for Newborn Babies

by Admin

The Government of Botswana has announced new social welfare initiatives aimed at enhancing citizens’ well-being, set to take effect in 2025.

Among the key measures is a monthly allowance of P300 for newborn babies until they turn one year old. Botswana’s Vice President and Minister of Finance, Ndaba N. Gaolathe, unveiled this plan during the 2025/2026 budget presentation on February 10. However, details on the allowance’s implementation timeline are yet to be clarified.

In a move to support female students, the government also plans to provide free sanitary pads to promote dignity and educational equality. “We will be proposing the provision of free sanitary pads to female students, ensuring that dignity and essential needs are upheld across different segments of our population,” Gaolathe stated.

Additionally, the Old Age Pension, known as the Tandabala Allowance, will increase from P830 to P1,400 starting April 2025. Gaolathe emphasised that while fiscal constraints limit broader social welfare expansions, the government remains committed to inclusivity and the well-being of its citizens.

These initiatives highlight Botswana’s dedication to supporting vulnerable groups and ensuring resources reach those who need them most.
