The Covid-19 pandemic have yet again affected the annual Independence Day gala by the Finnish government. This time, invitation to the gala will be limited to 200 guests instead of the usual 2000 guests. This was announced at a press briefing on Wednesday by President Sauli Niinistö
The annual Independence Day gala was cancelled last year because of the epidemic. The climax of this year’s event will be the honouring of handful of the country’s numerous health professionals.
According to Yle, the invitations have not yet been sent, and further information about the guest list is scheduled to be announced next week. We understood that most of the guests have not attended the event previously.
Covid pass for the event?
Recall that Southern Finland could still witness the new Covid-19 restrictions which may make the guests list been shortened.
The President said that Covid passes will not be required of those in attendance, but that the matter depended on the law.
Finland’s Independence Day is a national public holiday, and a flag day (the national flag is flown nationwide). Finns celebrate their independence every year on 6th December. On that day in 1917, they became independent from Russia.
The annual event also pays tribute to the country’s war veterans, but this year a separate event will be arranged for that purpose, Yle reported.
