A 75-year-old man named Chief Stephen Irobunda has been arrested for allegedly shooting and killing 45-year-old Bright Odizuru Martins in Abia State.
The incident occurred on Saturday, November 2, 2024, in Umuodum Ohokobe Ndume, Umuahia North Local Government Area. According to ABN TV, Bright and other youths from the community were playing football near the suspect’s residence, which angered him.
Irobunda reportedly emerged from his house with a dane gun and fired into the air, causing the youths to flee in panic. They later regrouped and confronted him about his actions.
During the confrontation, he allegedly shot Bright in the stomach. The victim was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Following the shooting, a mob of angry youths descended on Irobunda, attempting to lynch him, but he was rescued by security agents. Reports indicate that the youths also tried to set his house on fire, but this was prevented by the police.
ASP Maureen Chinaka, spokesperson for the Abia State Police Command, confirmed the incident, stating that an investigation is ongoing at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
